Shondong, which translates as a “mountain river cave”, is the largest cave in the world. It is so big that its vaults can accommodate a modern skyscraper, and it even has its own small jungle. The largest cave chamber, as his team found out, is over 5,000 m long and 200 m high.
The scale of the cave is so impressive that under the ruined vault of one of the chambers its own jungle system has grown. After the cave collapse, enough light began to penetrate into the grotto to gradually develop plant life. To date, the flora has taken root to such an extent that rhinoceroses, flying foxes and monkeys have settled in tree branches.
